Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a chance of almost securing themselves a berth in the playoffs of the IPL. However, the Orange Army lost its last round-robin match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by four wickets to find themselves in a precarious position. Kane Williamson & Co. can do nothing, but hope for the Mumbai Indians (MI) to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) tomorrow.

Williamson eventually stands up

With SRH in a must-win scenario, Wriddhiman Saha and Martin Guptill came out firing on all cylinders. The duo scored 46 for the opening wicket but it was an incomplete task once again. Navdeep Saini drew first blood, getting rid of Saha, who hit four boundaries to score 20. Guptill was starting to find his feet, having scored a 23-ball 30 after which Washington Sundar nipped him out. Sundar got his second wicket in the form of Manish Pandey.

After losing three quick wickets, Vijay Shankar joined his captain Kane Williamson in the middle. Shankar got out for 27 and Kane took the onus of injecting impetus in the innings. The SRH skipper was lacklustre before this game and today he scored his maiden fifty this season off 38 balls. He remained not out on 70 off 43 with five fours and four sixes. The Sunrisers ended racking up 175 for seven in 20 overs.

Hetmyer and Gurkeerat- The heroes

The Challengers had a rather abysmal start to their run-chase. Bhuvneshwar Kumar nipped out Parthiv Patel for a golden duck in the first over. Khaleel Ahmed struck the body blow as he dismissed Virat Kohli, the RCB skipper, who already had 16 runs to his name. RCB’s innings turned from bad to worse after AB de Villiers edged one off Bhuvneshwar and the hosts were reduced to 20/3 in 2.5 overs.

Thereafter, Shimron Hetmyer and Gurkeerat Singh Mann took charge and got RCB back into the match. Hetmyer, who strained in the first few games, notched a half-century in 32 deliveries. At the other end, Gurkeerat also accomplished his fifty off 39 balls. The duo brought up a century stand in 64 balls.

In the last five overs, RCB required 46 runs and Shankar conceded 16 runs off it. Rashid Khan gave away two sixes in the 18th over but hit back by dismissing Hetmyer, who got 75 off 47 with four fours and six sixes. Gurkeerat managed 65 off 48. Umesh Yadav hit two fours off Nabi to carry RCB over the line.
