They overhauled the team; brought in former greats as coaches and mentors and even changed their name. All the hard work finally paid off as Delhi Capitals (DC), formerly known as Daredevils, made it to the playoffs for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2012. Led by Shreyas Iyer, the DC defeated bottom-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 16 runs at the Feroz Sha Kotla Ground on Sunday to qualify for the last-four phase as the second team after defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

DC now have 16 points from 12 games which is the same as that of CSK but are ranked top because of a better net run-rate. The DC had their lowest point in the tournament in a game against Kings XI Punjab in which they collapsed like a pack of cards, losing last seven wickets for eight runs.

However, the team bounced back from that disappointment fast and have won seven of their last eight matches. Opener Shikhar Dhawan hit yet another fifty in the match against the RCB to win the man of the match award. Kagiso Rabada, on the other hand, continued to maintain the lead as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 25 scalps.

Ranveer Singh congratulates Capitals

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh congratulated Delhi for making the playoffs for the first time as Capitals. The last time the Delhi franchise made it through was way back in 2012 when they had finished as the table topper but could not make the final, losing back-to-back matches against champions Kolkata Knight Riders and runners-up CSK.

Virender Sehwag was the captain of the former Daredevils on that occasion. The Delhi franchise has made the last four only three times so far but failed to make the final any time.

Ranveer also praised Rabada for his bowling performance in the tournament and called him a “young champion”. The South African pacer has claimed 25 scalps in the IPL this year at an impressive average of below 15 with two four-wicket hauls.
