For the ninth time this season, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli lost the toss and his team was asked to field first. The Delhi Capitals (DC) got to a great score batting first in the game and would’ve been proud of their efforts at the halfway mark. The openers provided the team with a blazing start but Prithvi Shaw couldn’t carry on for long. However, both Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Shreyas Iyer made a massive impact.
They took the attack to the bowlers and got to their respective fifties. Just as everything was going fine, the middle muddle struck the Capitals yet again. They lost 4 wickets for 38 runs in between and seemed to be in trouble. But, Sherfane Rutherford and Axar Patel bailed them out of trouble and helped the hosts get to a big total. They added 46 runs together of which 36 came in the last two overs as DC finished with 187 runs on the board.
DC bowlers prove to be too good for the RCB middle order
The Royal Challengers Bangalore struggled to get going in the chase. Even though they scored 64 runs in the powerplay, no one else except Parthiv Patel got going. The wicket-keeper batsman scored 39 runs from 20 balls but it’s been a struggle ever since he was dismissed. Both AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli, the backbone of RCB, failed to make an impact in this encounter and could only get 17 and 23 runs respectively.
Since then, the visitors could never get going. The DC bowlers hit the right areas and picked up regular wickets. 52 runs were needed off the final four overs and just 36 were conceded. With this win, DC make it into the playoffs while RCB became the first team to get knocked out of the tournament.
Here are the DC Player Ratings for the match:
Shikhar Dhawan – 8.5/10
Shikhar Dhawan registered his third consecutive fifty in this encounter. Yet again, he got the team off to a great start and scored exactly 50 runs in 37 balls. The left-hander smashed five fours and two sixes during his knock.
Prithvi Shaw – 4/10
Prithvi Shaw failed to create an impact yet again in this match. He did get the team off to a good start by attacking the spinners early on. However, he failed to stay in the middle and edged one to Parthiv Patel after he raced his way to a 10-ball 18.
Shreyas Iyer – 8.5/10
Shreyas Iyer played a knock pretty much similar to the one from Shikhar. He didn’t start off aggressively but caught up as the game progressed. He hit the big shots when required but couldn’t capitalise and stay in the middle right till the end. Iyer also got out as soon as he reached his half-century in this game. The skipper amassed 52 runs from 37 balls.
Rishabh Pant – 2/10
After the clinical knock against the Rajasthan Royals, Rishabh Pant couldn’t get going this game. He misjudged a straightforward leg-spinner from Yuzvendra Chahal and ended up playing down the wrong line. The wicket-keeper only managed to score a run-a-ball 7 and also wasted a review. It looked out as soon as the ball hit his pads.
Colin Ingram – 3/10
Colin Ingram walked into the middle at a critical juncture in the game. Even after some quick wickets fell at the other end, he tried to take the attack to the bowlers. He smashed a six and a four before he perished off the bowling of Navdeep Saini for 11 runs. Despite scoring 10 runs of the boundaries, the South African took 7 balls to score those 11 runs.
Sherfane Rutherford – 9/10
Sherfane Rutherford was brilliant in this game. He walked out to bat when his team was in trouble. DC needed to end the game on a good note if they were to stand a chance to win the match. He came and attacked the bowlers straightaway. The left-hander scored 28 runs in just 13 balls and also dismissed the dangerous AB de Villiers.
Axar Patel – 8.5/10
Axar Patel did well both with the bat as well as the ball in this match. He played the second fiddle to Rutherford towards the end of DC batting innings and hit three boundaries. The southpaw remained unbeaten on 16 from 9 deliveries. He was economical with the ball as well and got Virat Kohli out.
Kagiso Rabada – 7/10
Kagiso Rabada was brilliant yet again for his team in this critical encounter. The South African bowled two overs at the death in a high-pressure situation and gave away just 15 runs. He also picked up two important wickets including the one of Parthiv Patel.
Sandeep Lamichhane – 2/10
Sandeep Lamichhane didn’t have the best of outings in this encounter. The Nepal bowler was targetted by the batsmen and he conceded 36 runs off the three overs that he bowled. He didn’t have much to do on the field.
Amit Mishra – 8/10
Amit Mishra was terrific with the ball in the second innings. He was not afraid to toss the ball up and invited the batsmen to take risks. The approach paid off as he accounted for the wickets of both Shivam Dube and Heinrich Klaasen in the same over. In his four overs, Mishra gave away 28 runs.
Ishant Sharma – 8/10
Ishant Sharma did an excellent job at the death in this encounter. He had to bowl two out of the final four overs and was under the pump. He conceded 16 runs in the 17th over of the game but came back well when he was asked to bowl the 19th over. The lanky pacer dismissed Gurkeerat Singh and just gave away four runs in that over. This got over got the match in favour of the home team.
