Mumbai Indians, on Thursday, beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Super Over to enter the playoffs. The three-time champions became the third side after defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals to make it to the playoffs. The game ended in a thrilling tie before Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya starred in the Super Over to leave Bollywood star Ranveer Singh mighty impressed.

With the pitch not looking very suitable for stroke-making, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma opted to bat first after winning the toss. As expected, the batting looked tough as Mumbai Indians ended up with a modest total of 162 for 5. Quinton de Kock waged a lone battle, scoring an unbeaten 69 while the likes of Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard failed to provide the finishing touches.

In reply, Sunrisers started well with Wriddhiman Saha slamming 25 from just 15 as the visitors raced away to 40 inside three overs. However, Bumrah brought back Mumbai in the game by dismissing both Sunrisers openers — Saha and Martin Guptill in quick succession. The Sunrisers soon found themselves five down for 105 and were looking out of the contest. However, Manish Pandey held firm and scored 71 including a last-ball six to tie the game.

But in the Super Over, Mumbai did not let Pandey or Sunrisers any opportunity to get on top. Bumrah conceded just 8 runs off  4 balls as Pandey was run out on the very first delivery while Mohammad Nabi was castled on the fourth. Hardik Pandya then all but sealed the game by dispatching Rashid Khan for a six on the very first ball of the one-ball eliminator. Two balls later, Mumbai chased down the 8 runs to enter the playoffs.

Accolades from Ranveer Singh

Following the game, Ranveer Singh, an ardent Mumbai Indians fan, took to Twitter to congratulate the team for progressing ahead. He also praised Bumrah and Hardik, writing:

“Killer super over from Bumrah! World class competitor!  & Hardik just ruthless! Showing Rashid no mercy!  Congrats to @mipaltan for making it to the playoffs!  On to the next level! ”
