Whilst many of his friends are still in senior secondary schooling, 16-year-old youngster Prayas Ray Barman caused a bidding war in the IPL 2019 auction held in Jaipur. Hailing from West Bengal, the teenager was bought for a whopping Rs. 1.5 crore and will be joining Virat Kohli‘s Royal Challengers Bangalore for the season.

With eleven wickets in nine games for Bengal in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, the leg-spinner grabbed national-level attention. He was the highest wicket-taker for his side in the tournament and thus on the radar of IPL talent scouts. For a mid-teenage kid to have bowled at an economy of 4.45 in India’s elite-most 50-overs competition was bound to pay him a dividend and he got it from the RCB.

Interestingly, apart from these nine games that he played at the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season, he has not featured in any other competitive game. He is in the current Ranji squad and is expected to feature as the tournament progresses. He also has the ability to make a contribution with the willow.

“Prayas Ray Barman is BOLD! The 16 year old leg-spinning prodigy is already making waves with his state side Bengal! He joins the RCB family for INR 1.5 Cr,” said RCB’s official Twitter handle.

A busy day for RCB on the table

A lot of chopping and changing took place in the RCB camp on Tuesday as they bought a total of nine players including two foreign players in Shimron Hetmyer and Heinrich Klaasen. Hetmyer, who smacked the Indian bowlers to all parts a few weeks ago, went for a stellar Rs. 4.2 crore whilst dashing middle-order batsman Klaasen was bought at his base price of Rs. 50 lakh.

Mumbai’s hard-hitting batsman Shivam Dube went for a tremendous Rs. 5 crore and induced a bidding war between four teams. Just a few hours ago, Dube hit five sixes in an over against Baroda in the Ranji Trophy, which definitely must’ve made the franchises travel an extra mile to earn his services.
