Rajasthan Royals (RR) are having a tough time in the ongoing IPL 2019 as they are placed at the 7th spot on the points table after just 2 wins in 8 matches and four points. They need to win all the matches from here on to have any chances of making it into the playoffs stage.
Their players have displayed a couple of brilliant shows and one of those stars is Shreyas Gopal, who had mesmerized everyone with his leg spin and batting abilities down the order. Gopal has eight wickets from 8 matches at an economy rate of 6.60 and best bowling figures of 3/12. His best performance, however, came against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 2, where he picked up wickets of De Villiers, Kohli and Shimron Hetmyer.
Gopal says it is tough to have a plan to dismiss legends
“There was no plan for them (Kohli and De Villiers). You can’t make any plan for such great batsmen. I just wanted to bowl a googly and keep it tight as possible. They misread the line of the ball and I was fortunate to get their wickets,” Gopal was quoted as saying by Times of India.
Gopal, who is actually a batting all-rounder, is more used as a bowler by Rajasthan Royals and he is happy to contribute to the team’s cause. “There is no secret. I am just happy that my hard work in the past year is paying off. Despite the kind of result we are getting as a team, personally, I had a decent season from the start and will just try to continue and get even better. It is always good to have both skills in your armory as it gives you a chance to contribute to your team,” he opined further.
The Royals are not experiencing the best of tournaments in this edition and Gopal mentions, “It is probably the crucial moments which we are not winning and it is important to win those crucial moments. In most of our games so far, we have dominated throughout the match, but certain key moments cost us the match.”
Gopal also said that having players of the caliber in the likes of Steve Smith, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler in the team helps him develop the game. He says that he keeps observing them and understanding how they go about playing their game and is learning how to implement ideas given by them on the field.
