Ravi Ashwin might not have thought that his decision to Mankad Jos Buttler in order to turn the tide of the match in his team’s favour would have such ramifications. KXIP won the game against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 14 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, but the echoes of Ashwin’s decision have resonated on social media.

The cricketing world saw Ashwin run Jos Buttler out in the 13th over of the Royals’ chase, who was batting on 69 and taking the game away from Punjab in the chase of 185 runs. Ashwin went into his delivery stride, landed both the back and front foot and waited for a second or two to let Buttler drag his bat out of the crease, before dislodging the bails and appealing for a run-out.

The third umpire was called in to adjudicate and he gave Buttler out as he was out of his crease when the bails were dislodged and a disgruntled batsman made his way back to the dressing room, cussing and hitting his bat on the ground on his way.

Cricket world divided as Warne accuses Bhogle of bias

The cricketing world was divided into camps with one defending Ravi Ashwin’s actions, while the other calling it a disgusting act from a captain of a T20 team in a renowned cricket league. The likes of Michael Vaughan, Eoin Morgan, Sam Billings, and Shane Warne were highly critical of Ashwin’s actions.

However, Harsha Bhogle, imminent cricket commentator and journalist took to Twitter and seemingly defended Ashwin’s actions by tweeting that the law of cricket regarding this Mankading has no mention of giving the batsman any warning and compared it with a wicketkeeper stumping the batsman.

Harsha Bhogle had tweeted, “Nothing in the laws though about warning. Just as there is nothing in the laws about a wicketkeeper warning a batsman for being out of the crease and not stumping him.”

Shane Warne didn’t take this lightly and went on to accuse Bhogle of being biased towards a player from is own country. He tweeted, “Harsha you are missing the point completely & I’m disappointed in you as you always push the spirit of the game – now you condone this behaviour? Ashwin’s actions were simply disgraceful, and I hope the BCCI doesn’t condone this sort of behaviour in the #IPL ! #spiritofthegame.”

He further tweeted, “Harsha, if that had of been an international player you would have nailed him ! Please do not be bias & stick up for your own. Any player in the game that does that to anyone is an embarrassment to the game & as captain, it’s even more disgraceful! #spiritofthegame.”
