After clinching their first IPL 2020 encounter in an enthralling super over, Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals locked horns with MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings at Dubai International Stadium. It was a battle between the oldest and the youngest skipper where Dhoni put Iyer’s troops to bat first on a pitch which was rather looking like a Chepauk one. But in the end, it was the Shreyas’ troops who emerged on top as they registered an emphatic 44-run victory, paving their way to the top of the points table.

Delhi’s opening duo of Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan steered them to a steady start as they added 36 runs in the first six overs in the Powerplay. They continued to add runs on the scoreboard, adding 94 runs before the departure of Dhawan in the 11th over. Shaw also followed him in the subsequent over as DC’s score reflected 103/2 at Shaw’s dismissal.

After the departure of both the openers, skipper Iyer and swashbuckling Rishabh Pant added vital runs to DC’s total. While Iyer scored 26 runs off 22 deliveries, Pant stayed until the end and scored a 25-ball 37.

After Iyer’s departure in the penultimate over, Marcus Stoinis– last match’s hero with his fireworks– came in the middle but scored only five runs on three deliveries. DC failed to hit a single six after the departure of the Dhawan-Shaw pair. Despite a dearth in boundaries, Capitals managed to amass a challenging 175-run total on the scoreboard.

After failing to tick the 200-run mark, Delhi were hoping to dent CSK’s run-chase with early scalps. And that’s what happened when Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel provided DC with a wicket each in the Powerplay. It started looking like CSK’s previous run-chase against RR where the wickets started tumbling with a rise in the required run rate. Youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad also had to walk back after getting run out in the 10th over.

CSK succumbed to the required run rate yet again

In the first ten overs, CSK managed to amass just 47 runs on the board while chasing a mammoth pile of 175 runs. But with Faf du Plessis in the middle, CSK fans were still hopeful for a miracle. Meanwhile, in the middle overs, both the spinners– Amit Mishra and Axar Patel– spewed their web and kept boundaries at bay. In their combined eight overs, Mishra and Patel just conceded 41 runs to curb CSK’s run-flow.

Kedar Jadhav and Du Plessis did manage to stitch a 50-run partnership in the middle but Yellow Army still required a staggering 81 runs in the last five overs. CSK fans were eagerly waiting for some fireworks in the death but Nortje struck them with a blow by trapping Jadhav.

It was an arduous task for CSK to amass 75 runs on last 24 deliveries, especially against the likes of Rabada and Nortje. Rabada flaunted his bowling masterclass in the death overs and plucked the prized wickets of Du Plessis as well as Dhoni. It ultimately turned out as a lopsided encounter where DC thrashed CSK by 44 runs and amassed their second triumph in their IPL 2020 journey.

Twitter lauded DC’s batting show including Shaw’s impressive half-century. CSK, on the other hand, was trolled after losing consecutive matches in the same manner. While chasing against RR and DC, the Chennai side fizzled out and succumbed to the pressure, especially in death overs. After relaxing during their 6-day break, Dhoni’s men will be expected to bounce back with better performances.
