Two sides in dire need of a victory– Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings– locked horns in Match 21 of IPL 2020 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. Before coming into this encounter, both sides had won two out of their four games and were vying for two much-needed points.

In the end, it was the Kolkata side which successfully defended 167 at Abu Dhabi and scalped crucial CSK wickets in the middle overs, ultimately scripting an impressive 10-run victory. KKR amassed two crucial points as they registered their third victory of the tournament.

The Kolkata side, led by Dinesh Karthik, started off with a tweaked batting force as Rahul Tripathi-Shubman Gill duo opened the innings. The team management’s decision turned out to be a fruitful one as Tripathi, proving his worth, slammed a brilliant 81 off 51 deliveries to anchor KKR’s run-flow. He slammed 8 fours and 3 sixes in the course of his impressive knock.

KKR put up an impressive bowling display at the end

It was a one-man-show as no other KKR batsman apart from Tripathi managed to stick in the middle. Shubman Gill (11), Nitish Rana (9) and Sunil Narine (17) failed to stitch a prolonged partnership with Tripathi. KKR’s batting woes continued as Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell were also shown the exit door on 7 and 2 respectively.

KKR were ultimately wrapped up on 167 by the CSK bowling unit. Dwayne Bravo, one of the most experienced CSK player, scalped three wickets and emerged as the most successful bowler. Apart from the Caribbean all-rounder, Sam Curran, Shardul Thakur and Karn Sharma also scalped two wickets each.

Coming on to CSK’s run-chase, the Yellow Army lost the wicket of in-form Faf Du Plessis in the Powerplay. The former South Africa skipper departed on 17 but it didn’t affect CSK’s run-scoring spree. Shane Watson, replicating his previous match’s batting show, conducted the orchestra along with Ambati Rayudu.

However, there was a twist in the tale after the departure of Rayudu and Watson. After the pair’s dismissal, no Chennai batsman including skipper Dhoni managed to stay glued to the crease. Dhoni departed after a sluggish 11 off 12. To add to CSK’s woes, Sam Curran also followed him after just four deliveries.

In the end, all eyes were on Kedar Jadhav and Ravindra Jadeja to pull off CSK’s heist. However, the KKR bowling unit restricted the Men in Yellow to 157 runs and snatched an incredible victory. While Jadeja slammed 21 off 8, Jadhav failed to put up a quick-fire knock. He managed to gather just 7 off 12 deliveries and was trolled for his inefficient show with the willow.
