Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) are on a roll in the ongoing 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the franchise registered its fifth consecutive victory on October 26, Monday after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 8 wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. From winning just 1 match out of the first 7 games to winning 6 fixtures from 12 games, KXIP have successfully travelled the journey from being wooden spooners to the fourth spot in the points tally.

The Knight Riders were sent to bat first by the Punjab franchise. It was another mediocre batting display by KKR. They got off to a disastrous start having lost their wickets in the first two overs. Skipper Eoin Morgan and opening batsman Shubman Gill stitched an important 81-run partnership to take the team from an embarrassing score of 10/3 to 91/3 with 10 overs. However, the Kolkata batters again started struggling as KXIP spin department including the likes of Murugan Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi was absolutely brilliant today as they gave just 47 runs in their 8 overs while taking three wickets.

Chris Gayle’s tremendous form helps KXIP win the game

The Knight Riders could only post a below-par total of 149 at the loss of 9 wickets in their 20-overs. Gill was the top-scorer for his team with a knock of 57 off 45 followed by Morgan’s innings of 40 off 25 deliveries. Mohammed Shami emerged as the highest wicket-taker for the Punjab franchise with 3 wickets followed by Bishnoi and Chris Jordan who had two each to their name.

Chasing 150 in the 20 overs, Punjab fancied having an aggressive start, however, the batter KL Rahul and Mandeep Singh were not able to time the ball well. As a result, the team was reeling at 47 runs in eight overs when the captain Rahul walked back to the pavilion.

Kolkata was very much in the game thus far as the asking rate was approaching 10, but after playing a few balls Chris Gayle got set and crashed all the hopes of the opposition to win the game. His quickfire knock of 51 off 29 including 5 sixes and 2 fours ensured that Punjab comfortably won the match. Gayle was ably supported by opener Mandeep who played an innings of unbeaten 66 off 56 deliveries.

An all-round performance by the Kings resulted in them winning this much-needed match to claim a spot for themselves in the playoffs.
