Two depleted sides– Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad locked horns with each other at Abu Dhabi in pursuit of their maiden IPL 2020 victory. Both the sides, in their opening fixtures, had failed to hunt down the target against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians respectively.
To shrug off a poor start, SRH went with three changes while KKR made two. But in the end, it was the Kolkata side who emerged victorious after curbing SRH to a modest total of 142 runs. Shubman Gill’s batting brilliance guided KKR to a comprehensive seven-wicket win as they registered the first victory of their IPL 2020 campaign
It was David Warner who won the toss and decided to bat first, aiming to give his side an explosive start along with fellow opener Jonny Bairstow. However, Bairstow, who had slammed an impressive half-century in SRH’s opening fixture, was shown the exit door by KKR’s record signing– Pat Cummins.
Shubman Gill impressed everyone with his fifth IPL half-century
The Australian quick nipped it back and castled Bairstow’s off-stump in the fourth over. After being struck with an early blow, skipper Warner and Manish Pandey kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and occasional boundaries. They, however, managed to amass a modest 40 in the first six overs of the Powerplay.
Skipper Warner was also shown the exit door by Varun Chakravarthy in the 10th over, which left the stage clear for Wriddhiman Saha. The wicketkeeper-batsman, however, disappointed many fans by playing a slow knock. He managed to amass only 30 runs in 31 deliveries. Manish Pandey, on the other hand, slammed his 16h half-century in the tournament. He weaved his knock around 3 fours and 2 sixes and played a crucial role in SRH gathering 142 runs on the board.
In response, the Kolkata knights had no problem whatsoever in hunting down the total. Despite Sunil Narine’s departure on a duck, KKR’s run-flow didn’t hinder. It was youngster Shubman Gill who rose to the occasion and slammed a brilliant half-century. KKR lost the wickets of Dinesh Karthik and Nitish Rana but Gill’s willow kept churning out runs from the other end.
It was the Shubman Gill-Eoin Morgan pair which steered KKR to the victory in just 18 overs. While Gill remained unbeaten on 70, Morgan hit the winning four and reached 42. Seeking redemption, Karthik and Co finally registered their first victory of the tournament. Twitter erupted with wishes for young Gill for his match-defining knock. Many even hailed him as the best young batting talent of the country.
Saha, on the other hand, was trolled for his sluggish batting. SRH, after losing two consecutive matches, will have the pressure of retaliating in their third game against Delhi Capitals.
