The Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) registered an easy victory against the table-toppers Delhi Capitals (DC) by 5 wickets on Tuesday (October 20) at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. From being the wooden spooners at one point in time in IPL 2020 to three wins on the bounce, KXIP have surely turned the tide in a positive manner. Interestingly, their past three wins have come against the Top 3 of the points table namely DC, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Winning the toss, the Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer made the obvious choice of batting first. It was again a Shikhar Dhawan show for the Capitals as the swashbuckling opening batsman smashed his second consecutive century in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the only player in history to register two back-to-back IPL centuries.

The left-hander brought his century (106*) off just 61 deliveries including 12 boundaries and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 173.77. However, DC fell short by 10-15 runs as the rest of the batsmen collectively scored just 58 in 59 balls. Nonetheless, owing to the heroics of Dhawan the franchise posted a decent total of 164 at the loss of 5 wickets on the board in 20 overs.

For KXIP, their pace spearhead Mohammed Shami emerged as the highest wicket-taker with two wickets of Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer. While James Neesham, Glenn Maxwell and Murugan Ashwin had one each to their name.

Nicholas Pooran takes Punjab to victory

The Punjab-based franchise had a decent start as despite losing two wickets of their mainstays namely skipper KL Rahul and Chris Gayle in the powerplay, the batsmen kept ticking the scoreboard. The West Indies left-hander Nicholas Pooran scripted victory for his team with his quickfire innings of 53 off 28 balls.

He had smashed 6 fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 189.29. Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, who has been quiet with the bat in the league thus far, also made a notable contribution by adding 32 runs off 24 deliveries. James Neesham smashed the winning six in the second-last over to take Punjab home with 6 balls remaining.

The pacer Kagiso Rabada again did the deed for his franchise as he took two wickets while giving 27 runs in his four overs. The spinners Azar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin also had one each to their names.
