Continuing their dismal IPL 2020 campaign, KL Rahul-led Kings XI Punjab choked at the back of the innings, handing victory to Kolkata Knight Riders by the narrowest of margins. Despite stitching an impressive 115-run opening stand, KXIP failed to steer past the finish line as they ultimately fell short by 2 runs at Abu Dhabi.

After electing to bat first, KKR suffered an early blow in the form of Rahul Tripathi. The in-form batsman was sent back to the dugout in the third over after Mohammed Shami rattled out the timber. Nitish Rana, in the very next over, also had to depart after getting run out due to a miscommunication.

After two setbacks, Shubman Gill and Eoin Morgan stitched a 49-run partnership to keep the scoreboard ticking. While Gill scored a sublime 57 off 47, Morgan gathered a 23-ball 24. But in the end, it was skipper Dinesh Karthik who rose to the occasion and elevated the run-flow with his blistering innings. Karthik, leading his side from the front, hammered 8 fours and 2 sixes, scoring 58 off just 29 balls.

KXIP let the game slip out of their hands

On the back of Karthik’s touch at the end, KKR managed to amass a competitive total of 164 runs on the scoreboard. After amassing just 25 runs in the Powerplay, the Kolkata side scripted an impressive comeback to tick the 160-run mark at Abu Dhabi. For Punjab, the young pair of Arshdeep Singh and Ravi Bishnoi emerged successful yet again. Both the young guns scalped a wicket each while conceding runs at an impressive economy of 6.25.

Talking about KXIP’s run-chase, all eyes were on skipper Rahul and Mayank Agarwal to orchestrate their side’s heist. The Karnataka duo delivered. And how! Both the batsmen played a crucial role in Punjab’s run-chase by smashing impressive half-centuries.

By shuffling the strike and hitting occasional boundaries, Rahul and Mayank kept the scoreboard ticking. It looked like the duo will easily guide KXIP to the victory. However, the game completely changed after their departure. KXIP were 115/1 when Mayank departed.

But their batting force shattered in the next five overs. It all boiled down to KXIP needing 12 runs from the last five deliveries. Sunil Narine, however, succeeded in restricting KXIP only to 162.

With this narrow defeat, Punjab failed to clinch yet another game which was looking in their hands. They’ve won just one game so far and are sitting at the bottom of the points table. Rahul’s troops were trolled for putting up another disappointing show in the UAE.
