After losing their opening game against Delhi Capitals in an exciting encounter which went to a super over, KL Rahul-led Kings XI Punjab locked horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the sixth match of IPL 2020. Retaliating against their previous loss, KXIP steamrolled RCB to register a convincing 97-run victory at the Dubai International Stadium.

The Punjab side was put in to bat first by RCB skipper Virat Kohli and in Chris Gayle’s truancy, Mayank Agarwal was expected to repeat his previous match’s heroics. The right-hander had slammed a stellar knock of 89 runs against Delhi. Despite starting steadily in the Powerplay, Agarwal was sent back to the pavilion by Kohli’s go-to man– Yuzvendra Chahal.

KL Rahul became the fastest Indian to score 2000 IPL runs

Spinning his leg-spin web around Agarwal, Chahal bowled him with a googly. KXIP, however, were unfazed by Agarwal’s departure as skipper Rahul slammed his half-century in Punjab’s quest of amassing a dominant total on the board. Rahul hit a flurry of boundaries and also became the fastest Indian batsman to gather 2000 runs in the IPL.

It didn’t end there for Rahul as ultimately went berserk in the death overs and slammed a scintillating 132-run knock. He demolished RCB bowlers in his whirlwind knock, smashing 14 fours in 7 sixes in the process. In the penultimate over which was bowled by South Africa’s Dale Steyn, Rahul smoked him for 26 runs and hit 3 sixes and 2 fours in six deliveries.

On the back of Rahul’s stellar ton, KXIP amassed 206 runs on the board to put RCB under pressure. Coming on to the second innings, the Punjab side shifted the game in their favour in the Powerplay itself. The pace bowling duo of Sheldon Cottrell and Mohammed Shami dented RCB with three early blows. RCB’s top-order force– Devdutt Padikkal, Josh Philippe and skipper Kohli were sent back to the pavilion in the first three overs.

With required run-rate increasing at a significant rate, RCB started losing wickets at regular intervals. The possibility of clinching the match started looking vague for RCB, especially after Aaron Finch and AB de Villiers were dismissed by Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin respectively.

After losing the first five wickets on just 57 runs, RCB’s remaining batting options eventually fizzled out on a modest total of 109 runs. Washington Sundar, who scored 30 off 27 deliveries, emerged as their top run-getter.

Twitter erupted after KXIP’s triumph as fans lauded Rahul’s stellar show. He single-handedly shifted the match in KXIP’s favour on the back of his scintillating ton. RCB, meanwhile, were trolled for their slump in the run-chase.

Skipper Kohli was also targetted by trollers after he dropped Rahul twice in the first innings. Known as one of the safest fielders in international cricket, Kohli was mocked after he gave Rahul two vital lifelines.
