Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) locked horns against each other in the 1st Qualifier of the IPL 2020 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In a highly anticipated contest, Capitals batting line-up floundered in front of MI’s pace attack and paved the way for an easy victory for the four-time champions. Mumbai conquered the 22-yards as they registered a massive victory by 57 runs to confirm a spot in the final.

Invited to bat first, the defending champions received the first hiccup in the form of skipper Rohit Sharma, who bagged a golden dug. However, Quinton de Kock showed his class by smashing 40 off 25 deliveries along with a fluent fifty by Suryakumar Yadav (51 off 38). Then came a phase when the team slid from 78-1 to 101-4 as the power hitter Pollard also went on a duck.

Ishan Kishan and Krunal Pandya steadied the ship and took it to 140 runs in 16 overs. In the last four overs, the all-rounder Hardik Pandya and Ishan made a mockery of Delhi’s proud pace attack. The duo slammed 60 off the last 24 balls to post a humongous total of 200 on the board.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowler for the Capitals as he gave early breakthroughs to the team and bowled a stunning spell of 4-0-29-3. Apart from Ashwin, Marcus Stoinis and Anrich Nortje also picked one wicket each, however, the latter proved to be a little more costly for the team with an economy of 12.5.

Delhi batting line-up collapses once again

Chasing 200, DC suffered a horrendous start as they became the first team in IPL history to lose the first three wickets for zero runs. Trent Boult started the evening with a maiden over and took two wickets of Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane. He was aptly supported by Jasprit Bumrah who bowled the second over and sent Shikhar Dhawan back to the pavilion. After losing three wickets, DC disappeared and never returned.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer tried to play optimistic cricket but lost to Bumrah as the pressure of the required run-rate started piling up. Rishabh Pant again failed to live up to his name and as a result, Delhi was reeling at 41/5 in 8 overs. Stoinis emerged as a lone warrior as he smashed as many as he could.

Axar also supported the all-rounder very well and the two collected a 71-run stand. But soon Bumrah returned to name the big wicket of Stoinis and record his career-best T20 figures (4-1-14-4). After that, it was just a matter of time as MI registered a big victory by 57 runs.
