Mumbai Indians (MI) have continued to dominate the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) and are only one win away from defending their title. They thumped the Delhi Capitals by 57 runs in the first qualifier of the tournament to march into the final of the season While it was the duo of Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya with the bat for them, Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah left DC reeling early on in the steep chase that did the trick for the four-time champions.

Earlier, after being invited to bat first, MI lost their skipper Rohit Sharma in the second over of itself courtesy of Ravi Ashwin. The former bagged a duck for the record 13th time in the history of the IPL. However, that didn’t deter Quinton de Kock who had already slammed 15 runs in the first over of the innings. He continued batting in his own way to propel the team to 63 in the powerplay overs.

But Ashwin came back into the attack to trap him for a 25-ball 40. At the other end, Suryakumar Yadav once again displayed his class playing some eye-catching strokes. Like De Kock, he also played brilliant shots to leave DC bowlers stunned. However, Anrich Nortje got the better of him with a bouncer but not before he got to his fourth fifty of the season.

This is where things turned dramatically for MI. After losing Surya, Ashwin picked his third wicket of the night sending back the dangerous Kieron Pollard for a second-ball duck. Ishan Kishan and Krunal Pandya then added 39 runs for the fifth wickets rebuilding the innings. The latter got out for just 13 runs only for Hardik Pandya to come out and taken on DC’s bowling at the death.

Kishan was also set by then and what transpired in the last three overs was carnage. Daniel Sams, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada collectively went for 55 runs in three overs as Kishan and Hardik didn’t spare any of them. MI, on the back of the assault in the death overs, managed to touch the 200-run mark which, after losing Surya and Pollard quickly, looked a distant dream. Only Ashwin bowled well for DC returning with the figures of 3/29 in four overs.

DC stumble in chase despite Stoinis’ 65

If you were having something to munch on while watching the much-anticipated chase, then definitely you must have missed DC’s three wickets. It took only 8 balls for the duo of Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah to send back the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw. All the three batsmen bagged a duck and the scorecard read 3/0.

It soon became 20/4 with their skipper Shreyas Iyer also not hanging around. Rishabh Pant’s poor run since coming back from injury continued as he left DC reeling at 41/5. Marcus Stoinis, however, refused to give up and took Axar Patel by his side to keep his team in the hunt.

He took a special liking to the leg-spinner Rahul Chahar smacking him for boundaries at will churning out 35 runs in his two overs. Even Kieron Pollard’s third over turned out to be expensive as the 71-run stand brought the equation down to 89 runs off the last five overs. To break the partnership, Rohit brought back his ace bowler Bumrah and it took only a ball for him to dash DC’s ray of hope.

The length ball at pace skid through nicely to take off Stoinis’ leg pole and Bumrah bounced out Daniel Sams in the same over itself. The pacer also owned the purple cap with it taking his tally to 27 scalps in the season which are also the most for an Indian bowler in the history of IPL. As far as DC is concerned, they could only reach 143 in their 20 overs and lose the match by a mammoth 57 runs.
