After registering a convincing five-wicket triumph against defending champions Mumbai Indians, CSK locked horns with a Jos Buttler-less RR in the fourth match of IPL 2020. It was a clash of two Rising Pune Supergiant allies, MS Dhoni and Steve Smith, where the latter emerged victorious. After amassing a challenging total of 216 runs, RR curbed CSK to 200/6 in order to clinch the match by 16 runs.

The Rajasthan side, after being out to bat first, rolled out a fresh opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Smith against a dominant bowling set-up. 18-year-old Jaiswal, bracing the pitch a day after young Devdutt Padikkal’s impressive batting show against SRH, was expected to churn a few boundaries at the start. However, a mistimed shot against Deepak Chahar’s short-pitched delivery led to Jaiswal’s cheap dismissal.

After Jaiswal’s exit, the world witnessed Sanju Samson’s fireworks as he hit a flurry of sixes in his rampage. He smashed a 19-ball half-century while toying with Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja, hitting sixes for fun. Samson’s carnage left CSK gasping for breath as he slammed 74 off just 32 deliveries. After the end of Samson’s fireworks, it was Smith who notched up his half-century to keep the scoreboard moving.

Sam Curran brought CSK back into the game by scalping three wickets in the latter phase of the innings. But Jofra Archer’s last-over heroics ensured that RR put a dominant 216-run total on the board. The Barbadian-born English quick flaunted his batting forte and played a quick-fire 27 run cameo to steer his side past the 200-run mark. He slammed Lungi Ngidi for four consecutive sixes in the last over as RR became the first team in IPL 2020 to register over a total which was over 200.

Talking about CSK’s run-chase, they flagged off to a steady start after Shane Watson and Murali Vijay stitched a 56-run opening stand. However, Vijay and Watson were shown the exit door by Shreyas Gopal and Rahul Tewatia respectively. Tewatia struck yet again in the ninth over and scalped wickets of Sam Curran and Ruturaj Gaikwad on consecutive deliveries.

The climbing run-rate mounted pressure on CSK, leading to the dismissal of Kedar Jadhav. Faf du Plessis, who had also slammed a brilliant fifty against MI, tried to save CSK’s sinking ship. He almost pulled off the heist but got out in the ultimate over to hand over the victory to Royals.

Twitter was filled with tweets about Samson’s batting heroics, Smith’s valiant show, Archer’s quick-fire cameo and Du Plessis’ feisty batting. It eventually turned out to be a nail-biting contest between the two dominant sides. With 38 needed from last six balls, skipper Dhoni did provide CSK fans with some late fireworks after he slammed Tom Curran for 3 consecutive sixes in the last over. Fans were also elated after witnessing Mahi’s old avatar.
