In Match 15 of the IPL 2020, two batting heavyweights– Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals– locked horns at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The first match of the Saturday’s doubleheader was a clash between two modern-day batting greats– Virat Kohli and Steve Smith.

Kohli’s troops, in their previous match against Mumbai Indians, had clinched the victory by the narrowest of margins in a dramatic Super Over. Royals, on the other hand, in their last encounter, had suffered their first defeat of the tournament after succumbing to Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowling unit.

But in the end, it was Kohli’s army which emerged victorious against Smith’s men at Abu Dhabi. After amassing 154 runs on the board, Royals failed to scalp RCB’s wickets as the Bangalore side hunted down the target with five deliveries to spare. After thumping MI in the Super Over, RCB added another victory to their bag.

Vying for breaking into the top half of the points table, RR skipper elected to bat first after winning the toss. RCB, meanwhile, opened their bowling expedition with Isuru Udana and Washington Sundar. Udana, with his seam movement, proved effect at the start as he ruffled Smith’s woodwork in the third over. Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson were also shown the exit door in the Powerplay and RR was left reeling at 31/3.

Virat Kohli finally ended his woeful run with the bat

After the top-order collapse, debutant Mahipal Lomror stitched a vital knock and kept the scoreboard ticking. The 20-year-old scored 47 off 39 before departing in death overs. In the end, the explosive duo of Rahul Tewatia and Jofra Archer, as expected, produced several fireworks to guide RR to a 154-run total. While Archer amassed 16 off 10 deliveries, Tewatia slammed a 12-ball 24 including three maximums. RCB’s Yuzvendra Chahal, scalping three wickets, also bagged the Purple Cap in the meantime

Talking about RCB’s run-chase, their heist started off with the dismissal of Aaron Finch in the third over. The Australian veteran decided to go for a paddle sweep only to get trapped off Shreyas Gopal’s delivery. But after suffering an early blow, RCB didn’t look back until they marched past the finishing line.

20-year-old Devdutt Padikkal, proving his worth with the bat yet again, slammed a brilliant half-century to bolster RCB’s run-chase. He was also assisted by Kohli as the RCB skipper slammed an IPL half-century after more than a year. Padikkal departed after scoring a 45-ball 63 but he already had made things easier for the Bangalore batting unit.

RCB eventually hunted down the total in the last over, with AB de Villiers slamming the winning boundary and skipper Kohli remaining unbeaten at the other end on 72. With this eight-wicket victory, they’ve also moved up to the top of the points table.
