It rained boundaries and maximums at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The fans were entertained with some sensational batting masterclass as Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals locked horns against each other in the fourth match of IPL 2021. Though in the end the high-scoring encounter was clinched by Punjab by 4 runs, the captains of both the teams including the likes of Sanju Samson and KL Rahul led from the front and played blistering innings with the willow.

The match commenced with Samson winning the toss in his maiden match as the captain and inviting KL Rahul & Co. to put the total on the board. Batting first, Punjab Kings’ batsmen totally dominated the opposition bowlers as they hammered the ball like anything all over the park.

The skipper Rahul played a captain’s knock as he scored 91 runs off 50 deliveries including seven fours and five sixes. The Indian all-rounder Deepak Hooda also went berserk with the willow as he smashed 64 runs in just 28 deliveries at a stunning strike rate of 228.57. Chris Gayle also did his bit in the middle by adding 40 runs to the scoreboard. The blistering batting by the skipper and Hooda propelled PBKS to a mammoth total of 221 runs.

Sanju Samson smashes a ton on his captaincy debut

For Royals, debutant Chetan Sakariya shined with the ball as he picked three wickets while bowling at an economy rate of 7.8. Apart from Chetan, Chris Morris also picked two wickets while Riyan Parag had one under his belt.

Chasing 222, Rajasthan Royals’ innings was all about the class and temperament shown by their skipper Sanju Samson. The franchise got off to a torrid start as they lost both their opening batsman Ben Stokes and Manan Vohra cheaply. This was followed by Jos Buttler, Shivam Dube, and Riyan Parag playing short but effective cameos and departing back to the pavilion. However, Sanju held his fort at one end and changed his gears as and when required.

In the end, the equation boiled down to RR needing five runs to win with Samson on the crease and young Arshdeep with the ball. The RR skipper hit the ball in the air but before it could be converted into a winning shot, Hooda made no mistakes and took an easy catch while standing at the boundary. The brilliant bowling in the final over by Arshdeep resulted in Punjab emerging victorious by four runs. It also brought an end to Sanju Samson’s scintillating knock of 119 runs off just 63 deliveries including 12 fours and seven maximums.
