Barely two weeks into the new IPL season, we have already witnessed some wonderful thrillers, outstanding individual game-changing performances as well as a fair amount of drama and surprises. While there have been teams and players that have impressed and exceeded expectations, some others have flattered to deceive so far in the 15th edition of the tournament.
The same goes for some high-profile Indian players who had been given a vote of confidence from their franchise along with a hefty pay-check. While it is still early days in the season, we take a look at five players who have failed to create the impact that their teams know they are capable of. There is plenty of time in the season to turn around their fortunes and there is enough quality in all of the below players that has merited their heavy price tag.
5 Indian Players who have failed to justify their hefty price tag
5. Yashasvi Jaiswal (Retained for INR 4 cr)
One of the finds of the U19 World Cup, Jaiswal was snapped by Rajasthan Royals (RR) and retained after a prolific outing in the last IPL. Touted as one for the future, the 20-year-old has the skill, technique and temperament to excel on the big stage, the glimpses of which he has provided last year.
However, this season he has been slow to get off the blocks and his surprisingly poor start has already cost him his place in the side, just four games in. Having produced meagre returns of just 25 runs from three innings at a strike rate of just over 100, Jaiswal has heavily underacheived and would be looking to establish himself back at the top of the order.
One of the players retained and looked as a long-term stalwart by the franchise, Yashasvi Jaiswal will definitely get an opportunity and will be looking to grab it with both hands. More than the INR 4 crore price tag, it is also the faith that Jaiswal has to repay to the Rajasthan Royals.
