Well, the mega auction of IPL 2022 begins on February 12th. The 10 franchises have also due diligently shortlisted a total of 590 players. From such a big pool, around 48 elite cricketers are highly placed in the marquee list of INR 2 Crore.
Following them, about 53 players are then set to go under the hammer from INR 1.5-1 Crore. However, in these two lists, there are also a few individuals who have tried to fetch demands on overly ambitious price tags. Needlessly they might get unsold because of their incorrect valuations.
Hence in this list, let’s check out 5 overseas players who have set their base price too high.
1. Craig Overton (Base price – INR 2 Cr)
Craig Overton as a proposition offers you both bowling and batting skills. The 27-year old had also recently made his white-ball debut for England in 2021. As a bowling all-rounder, Overton can establish himself at the number 8 position. However, his base price to enter IPL 2022 looks overly aspirational.
Perhaps for teams, there will be greater options like DJ Bravo, Chris Jordan and David Willey available in the bracket of INR 2 Crore. Even in lists between INR 1.5-1 Crore, there are other viable options like Jason Holder and Daniel Sams. In fact, even below the 1 Crore bracket, exciting bowling all-rounders like Ben Cutting, Carlos Braithwaite and Keemo Paul are also available.
Hence, with plenty of adequate picks obtainable, maybe Overton might fail to receive a contract in the 2022 mega auction.
2. Marchant de Lange (Base price- INR 2 Cr)
As an active T20 freelancer, Marchant de Lange is known for his express pace. Though at present the spearhead fails to constantly touch 90mph, still his bounce and variations scalp him adequate wickets. But sadly for entering IPL 2022, De Lange has kept his base price quite costly.
Perhaps for franchises, there will be elite pacers like Rabada, Lockie Ferguson and Mark Wood available against De Lange in the 2 Crore bracket. Even between the 1 Cr to 50 lakh lists, there are other healthy options like Adam Milne, Lungi Ngidi and Oshane Thomas available. Barring all of the above, the 31-year old will also run a race against greats like Trent Boult, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.
Overall, maybe to receive the IPL 2022 ticket, De Lange could have kept his base price at least under 1 Crore. Otherwise, the cricketer looks already dull amongst other candidates.
3. Ashton Agar (Base price- INR 2 Cr)
As a cricketer, Ashton Agar can bat anywhere along with his bowling skills. For Perth Scorchers, Agar is also their fourth-highest wicket-taker. But to bag the IPL 2022 pass, the southpaw has expensively priced himself in the mega auction.
In terms of Agar’s contemporaries, the teams will firstly receive better options like Washington Sundar and Mohammad Nabi for less than 2 Crore. Even Sri Lanka’s newest sensation Wanindu Hasaranga will be available at an attractive deal of 1 Crore. Also in the 75- 50 lakh bracket, players like Fabian Allen, K Gowtham and Akeal Hosein will offer alternate solutions.
Overall, the base price of the southpaw will not only make him compete with spin bowling all-rounders but also with marquee players. Hence, Agar’s IPL 2022 selection might become highly doubtful.
4. Colin Munro (Base price- INR 1.5 Cr)
For Colin Munro, the IPL hasn’t been any blissful in recent times. Since IPL 2019, the NZ cricketer has got omitted by many franchises. However, amidst this new dawn, Munro has again registered himself for INR 1.5 Crore. Unfortunately, even such a fee looks overwhelming for the southpaw.
Perhaps in general, Munro will firstly rub his shoulders against players like Jason Roy and Evin Lewis. In fact, in his bracket of 1.5 Crore, the teams will also get better options like Aaron Finch, Alex Hales, Chris Lynn and Jonny Bairstow. Even below the list of 1 Crore, there are other exciting choices like Martin Guptill and Joshua Philippe. And to bag even more reasonably, the likes of Ben McDermott and Heinrich Klaasen are also the alternatives.
Therefore, by looking at the plethora of attacking top-order batters, Munro might not even receive the slightest of the limelight. Overall, his puffed-up base price might again omit from playing IPL 2022.
5. James Vince (Base price- INR 2 Cr)
Well, the year 2021 for James Vince was nothing short of euphoric. The Hampshire batter not only exhibited the best form of his life but also won the inaugural Hundred competition. Even for England, Vince scored a match-winning century against Pakistan in ODIs. However, despite his consistent brilliance, Vince’s base price for IPL 2022 looks inflated.
Firstly, his price tag of INR 2 Crore will make him stand against the top-dogs like Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa and Shreyas Iyer. Even the 1 Crore bracket contains sizable options like Aiden Markram, Devon Conway, Josh Philippe and James Neesham. Perhaps as similar alternatives, the likes of Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith are also available.
Not to forget that in between the range of 75-20 lakh, there will be a realm of local players ready to get signed. Therefore, despite being in enriching batting form, the 30-year Englishman might go unsold in IPL 2022.
