Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals faced each other in a high-scoring encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in the 34th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday (April 22). Though the Royals registered a comfortable win by 15 runs in the end, the game was marred by controversy in the final over with the on-field umpires not giving a waist-high no-ball from Obed McCoy off the third delivery. Umpiring has been under the scanner in the IPL for years now and this season has been no different either.

The argument only went only a notch higher on the day with McCoy missing his line and delivering a high full toss. Rovman Powell, who had smacked a couple of sixes off two balls before, also managed to send this delivery into the stands to bring the equation down to 18 runs off three deliveries. The controversy began at this moment as the Capitals dugout was furious with the umpires not adjudging it the no-ball and all of them including the captain Rishabh Pant were off their seats.

Unhappy DC coaching staff protest against the decision

The likes of Shane Watson and Pravin Amre first had a word with the fourth umpire and then asked for the decision to be changed. When the decision stayed, Pant even decided to call back his batters from the ground. Even Jos Buttler, fielding at the boundary line, was not happy with the proceedings as he had an argument with the DC skipper.

In the end, Rishabh Pant decided to send the coaching staff member Amre on the field to protest umpire’s decision as the latter had a word with the umpire’s who were adamant on the play to go on and on their decision as well. The replays confirmed that it was a waist-high no-ball but the on-field decision stayed and the Royals managed to win the game in the end.

Delhi Capitals didn’t have their head coach Ricky Ponting at the venue for the game who is currently isolating himself after one of his family members tested positive for COVID-19. Not long ago, he was also not happy with one of the decisions from the umpire and was seen arguing with one of the match officials outside the boundary.
