In the promotion and relegation system followed in County Cricket, the top two teams in the lower division get a promotion to be a part of the higher division, while the two lowest-ranked teams in the higher division get demoted to the lower division. This system would allow the teams, which perform well to get their deserved chances to pit against the top teams in the tournament and enhance their skill-set. For example, if the teams like Netherlands and Ireland do well in their respective group, they can be up against the strong cricketing nations like India or Australia in a bilateral test series.

In the current Indian Premier League model, there is no place for Promotion and Relegation. However, this system can only allow the games to be more competitive, and the matches having more context, due to the two groups being divided ahead of the current season based on the performance of the teams in the previous season.

In the County Championship, there are Division I and Division II, and the overall span of the tournament is down due to the matches of both divisions being played at the same time at different venues. Former Indian cricketer, Deep Dasgupta has shared his views on would he like to see promotion and relegation in the future editions of the IPL.

Deep Dasgupta hopes to see home and away fixtures in IPL

Dasgupta reckoned that he does not think the promotion and relegation is a good idea as it can be difficult to schedule matches in two tiers and can get complex with the simultaneous matches being played at the same time. He suggests the home and away rule, with 18 games for each team. With 10 teams on the IPL roster, each team will play other teams twice on the home and away venues.

“Promotion and relegation maybe not, going forward what I would like to see is home and away. So obviously this would mean more games, that would be 18 games per team at least. It’s very difficult to get two tiers and all that, so rather than Promotion and relegation, home and away fixture against all,” Deep Dasgupta told CricTracker’s ‘Not Just Cricket’ show presented by Sky247.net.
