The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be a grand affair with new teams – based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad respectively – coming into the picture. Also, a mega auction is also set to take place which would see several sides going under revamps. Meanwhile, the eight existing franchises, on Tuesday (November 30), announced the list of their retained players.

With a mega auction taking place ahead of the next season, teams were allowed to retain a maximum of just four players. As most of the IPL teams are studded with T20 stars, selecting the retention wouldn’t have been easy. Also, a sum of INR 42 crore was required from a team’s salary purse of INR 90 crore to retain four players. Hence, team owners and officials would have done a lot of brainstorming before finalizing the list.

Speaking of Sunrisers Hyderabad, skipper Kane Williamson was their only capped retention. Hence, he was retained at the sum of INR 14 crore. Abdul Samad and Umran Malik were the team’s other two retentions. With the duo being uncapped players, they received INR 4 crore apiece. Notably, the side has released many prominent players like David Warner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and even Rashid Khan.

Reports have suggested that Rashid wanted to be SRH’s first retention and the owners wanted to give that privilege to Williamson. Hence, the Afghanistan leg-spinner didn’t feature in the retention list. While the franchise is expected to go after Bhuvneshwar in auction, if he’s not picked by one of the two new franchises, Warner has repeatedly mentioned that his tenure with SRH is over.

For the unversed, SRH’s horrendous campaign in the previous season was marred with controversies as well. Warner was sacked as SRH captain midway and Williamson took over the reins from him. This move didn’t really work the 2016-edition champions as they lost 11 of their 14 league-stage games and finished at the last place in the team standings. Meanwhile, SRH now have INR 68 crore left in their bank and it would be intresting to see how the bidding event would fare for them.
