Pat Cummins returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side in style after missing the first three matches as the Australian smashed the joint-fastest fifty in the history of the IPL. Cummins registered the fifty in just 14 deliveries after taking two wickets to script a five-wicket victory for his team against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 14 of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The Knight Riders chased down the target of 162 with four overs to spare as they moved to the top of the table with three wins in four games.

Speaking about how the encounter went by, skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to field first. While MI replaced Anmolpreet Singh and Tim David with Suryakumar Yadav and young Dewald Brevis respectively, KKR dropped Tim Southee and Shivam Mavi for Pat Cummins and Rasikh Salam. Openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan scored only three and 14 runs respectively. The star of the U-19 World Cup 2022, Dewald Brevis showed some glimpses of his hitting as he mustered 29 off 19 deliveries. Returning Suryakumar Yadav slammed a fifty, with Tilak Varma and Kieron Pollard scoring 38 and 22 runs respectively to take MI’s total to 161.

Venkatesh Iyer registered a half-century as other KKR batters struggled to contribute. Their middle-order collapsed as Nitish Rana’s poor run in the tournament continued. Andre Russell also failed to score much as he got dismissed for just 11 runs. Cummins then came out with all guns blazing as he clobbered an unbeaten 56 runs off just 15 balls with four fours and six maximums.

Cummins’ countryman Daniel Sams conceeded 35 runs in the 16th over as KKR scripted a famous victory with four overs remaining. Sams bowled the third-most expensive over in the history of the competition. KKR kept their winning record in Pune intact as they have now played seven matches at the venue and won all seven of them. For his outrageous and destructive hitting to go with the two wickets, Pat Cummins was declared the Player of the Match.
