The Kolkata Knight Riders decimated the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 54 runs in Match 61 of IPL 2022 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on May 14. By virtue of this big win, KKR are now pretty much alive in the playoff race and would need to register another victory by a bigger margin in their final league game, and then hope for other results to work in their favour as well. As far as SRH’s chances are concerned, it can be well said that they might not make it to the last four with a negative net run rate that worsened after the latest defeat.

Kolkata skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first and despite losing opener Venkatesh Iyer early, Ajinkya Rahane and Nitish Rana added 48 runs for the second wicket stand. Once Rana was dismissed, KKR lost wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 94/5 before Sam Billings (34) and Andre Russell carried out the rescue act with a 63-run stand for the sixth wicket. In the end, finishing touches from Russell propelled Kolkata to a competitive total of 177/6.

The Caribbean power-hitter remained unbeaten on 49 runs from 28 deliveries. Speedster Umran Malik finished with figures of 3/33 while the likes of T Natarajan, Marco Jansen, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar finished with a scalp each.

KKR bowlers derail SRH’s run chase

In reply, openers Abhishek Sharma and captain Kane Williamson made a statement with a 30-run opening stand before the latter was clean bowled. Sharma then looked to anchor the chase before being dismissed in the 12th over for a vital 43 runs from 28 balls. Unfortunately for the Orange Army, their batters failed to click as a unit in the all-important game, barring Aiden Markram, who tried to keep his side in the contest with a 25-ball 32.

However, his lone battle was never going to be enough without any support from the other end as the asking rate got steeper and the 2016 champions were eventually restricted to 123/8.

As far as Kolkata’s bowling performance is concerned, Andre Russell was the pick of the bowlers with 3/22, and Tim Southee contributed with 2/23. The trio of Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Sunil Narine chipped in with one wicket apiece.
