The Gujarat Titans locked horns with the Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Garden Stadium in Kolkata for Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2022 playoffs. Both the teams eyed for a victory in order to make their place directly into the finals, but it was the Titans who succeeded in doing so as they defeated the Royals by seven wickets.

RR did not get off to the desired start as they lost the in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal (3 off 8) early within the powerplay. While Jos Buttler took time to settle, skipper Sanju Samson batted like a star. After the Royals were dealt with a blow in the form of Jaiswal’s wicket, the skipper came out firing. Buttler was struggling, but he somehow survived the Mohammed Shami scare.

Samson (47 off 26) provided his team with a thrilling start. The duo added 68-runs for the second wicket before the skipper had to walk back. Rashid Khan came into the attack for the Titans and did what he is best at. In his four overs spell, he did not concede a single boundary and kept the RR batters to the ground level. Buttler, at one point, was struggling at 39 off 38, but he demonstrated why he’s one of the most terrifying batters around, destroying the bowlers and finding the gaps at regular intervals.

The Englishman gained momentum late and got great support from middle-order batters Devdutt Padikkal (28 off 20) as he went on to score a 56-ball 89 runs. A handful of wickets in the death overs helped Titans to restrict RR from crossing the 200-runs mark, but they still had a defendable total of 188/6.

David Miller finishes off in style for GT

Trent Boult got his team off to a flying start in the very first over of GT’s chase when he dismissed the in-form Wriddhiman Saha for a two-ball duck, giving his team a major breakthrough. But it was the Titans’ day out at the new venue. As Matthew Wade replaced Saha, Shubman Gill punished the RR bowling attack and hit them for multiple boundaries. After Gill (35 off 21) and Wade (35 off 30) were dished out, skipper Hardik Pandya (40* off 27) and David Miller took the game forward.

While RR fielders showcased quality fielding and saved plenty of runs, it became difficult for the bowlers to send them back to the pavilion. As the asking rate kept increasing, a couple of boundaries from Miller helped him compile his 12th IPL half-century and the game came down to GT needing 16 off the final over. Miller (68* off 38) smacked three sixes back-to-back to finish off the game in style as the Titans made their way into the finals in their first-ever IPL outing.
