While the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded just over a month ago, preparations for the next season are underway. All the eight existing franchises have been asked to submit the list of retained players by Tuesday (November 30). With the deadline approaching, officials and owners of all sides would be busy finalizing the retention list.
For the unversed, a mega auction will take place ahead of the next season. Hence, many sides are to undergo a revamp. Notably, a franchise can retain a maximum of just four players, out of which only two can be foreigners. As most of the teams are studded with T20 stalwarts, finalizing the list of retained players would require some brainstorming.
IPL 2022 Retention Rules
Speaking of the rules, salaries of retained players will be determined by the number of retentions made by the franchise. For example, if an IPL franchise decides to retain a maximum of 4 players ahead of the IPL auctions, then the total purse available for the 4 players will be INR 42 Crores. The first retained player will get INR 16 crore, the 2nd will be paid INR 12 crore, the 3rd will get a sum of INR 8 crore, and the 4th will be paid INR 6 crore.
In case, a franchise decides to retain 3 players, then the purse will be INR 33 crore. The first, second and third retained player will receive INR 15, 11 and 7 crore respectively. If a franchise makes on two retentions, the two players will be paid INR 14 and 10 crore respectively. At last, a player will bag an amount of INR 14 crore if he’s the only retention from his team.

IPL 2022 will be a 10-team affair
It has to be noted that not all non-retained players will land in the auction pool. IPL 2022 will be a 10-team affair with two new teams coming into the picture. The two new franchises – based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad respectively – can pick a maximum of three players from the list of non-retained players ahead of the bidding event. Also, no right-to-match card will be available in the auction event. Hence, it would be interesting to see who’ll be retained and who’ll be released.
