The Match 33 of IPL 2022 saw the Chennai Super Kings get the better of arch-rivals Mumbai Indians by three wickets in an edge-of-the-seat thriller that went right down to the wire at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on April 21. As a result of this loss, not only MI’s wait for their first win in the season continues but they also languish at the bottom of the points table.

The coin landed in the favor of Chennai skipper Ravindra Jadeja, who elected to have a bowl first. The decision was spot-on as uncapped pacer Mukesh Choudhary accounted for captain Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan in the very first over and then the bowlers worked in tandem to make easy work of the top-order.

Despite Suryakumar Yadav’s 21-ball 32, Mumbai’s scoring rate dipped before a valiant knock of 51 runs from 43 deliveries from Tilak Varma and a run-a-ball 25 from Hrithik Shokeen took the five-time champions to 155/7 from their 20 overs.

MS Dhoni finished it off in style for CSK

In reply, the Mumbai bowlers applied pressure on the Chennai batters early on and had them on the mat at 88/4. Veterans Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu held the innings from their respective ends, scoring 30 and 40 respectively. Once Rayudu was dismissed, the defending champions seemed to be in a spot of bother and when the scorecard read 106/6 in the 16th over, it appeared as if the floodgates would be opened for MI and they did capitalize till the last over.

Rohit Sharma handed over the ball to Jaydev Unadkat in the final over. The move turned out to be fruitful as he accounted for Dwaine Pretorius off the very first ball. Unfortunately, for the left-arm pacer, legendary finisher MS Dhoni roared back to form and dealt in boundaries for the remainder of the over. He scored a huge six and two fours. Dhoni smashed Unadkar through backward square leg for four runs and finished the proceedings in style in the final ball of the contest.
