The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently held a meeting with the franchisees. This was to initiate a consensus on the total salary purse alotted to the franchises for the auction, the number of player retentions and right to match cards for the IPL 2018 auction. Eventually, the meeting failed to reach any conclusion as all the franchises presented varied opinions.

However, much to the exception of all other proposals, there was an agreement on mid-season transfers. The idea was floated in as a wonderful concept by the franchisees. Ever since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the idea has been talked about outside the circles but it might as well come into effect this time.

This proposal is a win-win situation for players and teams

At times, we’ve seen player warming the bench for a considerable period in the tournament for a particular team whereas another could’ve made good use of his skill. The likes of Glenn Maxwell, Corey Anderson and Irfan Pathan is a sublime example of the same. However, with the introduction of mid-season transfers, we may actually get to see less of this.

“There have been instances where a player gets only a few games and that too towards the business end of the tournament or warms the bench throughout the season. A team buys a certain player in the auction, but later finds it difficult to accommodate him in the playing XI due to their combination or team balance. This proposal is a win-win situation for players and teams,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Midday.

He further stated that all the owners approved the idea and it remains to be seen if the Governing Council gives it a go ahead.

“The idea was discussed in the meeting and all owners/team representatives seemed convinced about it. The modalities will be worked out as soon as the IPL body accepts the proposal,” the source mentioned.
