The last week has seen quite a turmoil in India’s cricketing circles courtesy a dastardly terror attack on a CRPF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. A number of Indian cricketers – current and former – have lashed out at Pakistan, even demanding to boycott the World Cup clash with them on June 16. Senior cricketer Harbhajan Singh and former India captain Sourav Ganguly have been particularly sharp in their take on the matter with the latter even calling for severing all ties with the neighboring country.

Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad, who was a key member of the World Cup-winning team of 1992 under Imran Khan, has now hit out at Ganguly in strong terms. He said it seemed the former India cricketer is planning to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and indulging in what he said nothing more than a publicity stunt.

The 61-year-old Miandad, who scored over 16,000 runs in a career that spanned two decades told Pakistan’s leading daily Dawn, “I think Sourav wants to run for elections in the coming days or wants to become the chief minister as it is just a publicity stunt to gain the attention of his country mates.”

‘No chance of ICC listening to BCCI’

“There is absolutely no chance of the ICC listening to the BCCI as its constitution allows members the right to participate in its events.”

Meanwhile, uncertainty prevailed in the BCCI overtaking a definite stand on the high-voltage clash to be held at Old Trafford, England, this summer. There were even talks over the board writing to the International Cricket Council requesting to take a strong stand on Pakistan after the attack but even sources inside felt chances of the international body penalizing Pakistan are unlikely.

India had played Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup when the two were engaged in the Kargil War and beaten them too. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and others have opined in favor of India playing the game against Pakistan and beating them brutally once again. India have till now an all-win record over Pakistan at the showpiece event.
