Jason Gillespie, who has overseen back-to-back County Championship titles since his appointment as theĀ YorkshireĀ head coach, has confirmed he will not be applying forĀ the vacant position of Australiaās bowling coach. He has cited family commitments as the reason behind the refusal.
Darren Lehmann had named his former Australia team-mate Gillespie as the choice person for the job last month. Lehmann currently in Leeds and personally met Gillespie and took him through the position in detail.
āThere was always going to be speculation in light of [being named by Lehmann] and I can confirm he came to my place and we had a meal and a chat,ā said Gillespie. āHe brought up the fact there was a role coming up but I want to make it clear there was no job offer from Darren. He was merely gauging my interest.
āI said: āThanks for the chat,ā and: āI really appreciate it, Iāll talk to you tomorrow.ā But I then informed him that I wasnāt going to put my name forward and that I wasnāt going to apply for a role withĀ CricketĀ Australia.ā
āDo I want to be away for 250-plus nights a year? At this point in time in my life Iām not prepared to be away from my family for that length of time, explained the former Australia fast bowler, who has four young children based in Britain.
āIām a young coach and Iām still learning a lot. Iām enjoying my roles and itās not on the radar.ā
Gillespie said he would not be applying for any international roles and will be focusing on Yorkshireās current campaign. The upcoming season is very important for the club as it is eyeing their first hat-trick of County Championship titles since the 1960s.
āIām not looking too far ahead. Obviously,Ā weāve got a lot of cricket left this season and then with the Strikers at the end of the year. Iām enjoying my roles. You never rule anything out in professional sport, things do change and things can change. But at this point in time,Ā Iām very comfortable,ā he added speaking on BBC Radio.
