England wicket-keeper batsman, Jos Buttler, has backed his captain’s decision to sit out in the must-win encounter against South Africa. Buttler cited out the importance of players having a fresh set of mind with the grueling cricketing calendar in the modern era of the sport.
Much had been talked about Eoin Morgan‘s decision to pull out of the tiebreaker at Cardiff yesterday in order to give an opportunity to others in the squad. James Taylor and Michael Vaughan were seen condemning the captain’s decision to sit out in the crunch game.
Michael Vaughan tweeted by saying,”1-1 … Series decider … and the England Skipper is resting !!1 #WTF ….. Worlds gone mad,” while James Taylor expressed in the commentary box “He’s the leader and he should be playing,”. However, the move did not hurt England as the bench-strength of England by the names of David Malan and Tom Curran stood up to the occasion and England went on to win the 3-match T20I series by 2-1.
Jos Buttler defends his captain
“It shows how much cricket gets played. It’s very important to keep guys mentally fresh. If you turned up here, saw a brilliant game of cricket and England win the series, then as an England fan I think you can go home very happy,” quoted Jos Buttler according to Wisden India. He then lauded the efforts of Dawid Malan, who scored an impressive half century on debut.
“Dawid showed by that performance that there are some good players really knocking on the door. It’s not an easy thing to do, but he showed great composure on a wicket which he made look a lot easier than it was. He looked as if he was playing his 50th game, as opposed to his first.” added the stand-in captain of England yesterday. He concluded by commending the efforts of Curran who picked up vital wickets in his spell, keeping the Proteas in check.
“I was impressed with Tom again. He bowled well at Taunton and he knows his game very well, as does Liam Plunkett. Mason also seemed very composed. De Villiers obviously targeted that over to put pressure on a young guy in his second game. But Mason showed great heart and character to get his wicket.” concluded Buttler.
