JP Duminy was an integral part of the Delhi Daredevils side that secured an impressive win over the Mumbai Indians at the Feroz Shah Kotla. While a majority of the batting foundation was laid by starlet Sanju Samson, it was the big-hitting of JP Duminy that virtually sealed the deal for the Delhi Daredevils.

Speaking after the conclusion of the match, Duminy said that the match was in the balance in the final five overs. He also gave credit to the bowlers for snuffing out any possibility of a Mumbai Indians win.

“The game was still in the balance, (with Mumbai Indians) needing about 51 off 30 at one stage,” Duminy said.

“We batted really well and backed it up with the bowling. Most teams have been winning games chasing and it is good to be able to defend a score here,” Duminy added.

Duminy also added that it certainly was a challenging score to defend. He also added that the spinners Imran Tahir and Amit Mishra bowled exceptionally well in the middle overs.

“It was definitely a challenging score. We knew that getting wickets upfront was going to be the key. Fortunately for us, we got the first one through a run out,” the South African all-rounder said. “But we knew that the middle period was going to be very important for us to make sure that we put a dent in their batting line-up. The way Imi (Imran Tahir) and Mishi (Amit Mishra) bowled in the middle period was exceptional.

“Obviously, the seamers backed it up at the death. For me, that was a clinical bowling performance. Yes, there is always going to be room for improvement. But we would have taken 164 from the position we were in the beginning,” Duminy said.

“We played exceptionally well, we communicated really well. When the off-spinner was on, he took him on, when the left-arm was on, I tried to take him on. So, it was just about communicating well. And that’s something we have been talking about for a while, over the last couple of games. For a batting group, there are a couple of new faces, so we want to make sure that we communicate really well and we understand what each others’ strengths and weaknesses are,” Duminy explained.

The Proteas southpaw also added that the young players played an important role in proceedings. World T20 superstar Carlos Brathwaite was left out of the starting XI.

“Look, with the line-up we had, with Morry (Chris Morris) at seven; we didn’t have Carlos (Brathwaite) in this game, so it was important to build a partnership and sort of minimize the risk for the next three-four overs. (I) just basically said that if we’re there until the 12th over, we give ourselves a good chance of launching this over the last five-six overs,” he added.

“The nice thing is that all three of them have been performing well when given the opportunity,” he said. “It is just about marshaling them and helping them where you can. I’m definitely not the one who knows the nuances; yes, I’ve had a few more experiences and I might be able to know how to deal with certain pressures, but it is just great to feed off each other.

“It doesn’t say that the young players don’t understand situations; they read situations and have played situations really well over the last four games. And as you get wins under your belt, you create confidence within the batting group. It is just about carrying on and making sure that we capitalise where we can,” Duminy concluded.
