Kane Williamson is in the news but this time not for his flawless strokes but some spectacular work in the field. Williamson playing his first game since the champions trophy in June, turned out for the Barbados Tridents but couldn’t really find his touch with the bat, as he walked back for mere 13 runs off 20 balls. Barbados successfully defended 142/7, as they restricted Jamaica Tallawahs to 130/6.
Williamson managed to make an impact after taking a brilliant catch at point to send back legendary wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara for a rare first ball duck. Sangakkara slashed the ball hard but a stunning dive saw Williamson take hold of a beauty. The Kiwi international took one more catch off the bowling of Wahab Riaz to play an important role in the victory.
In the other game between Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, skipper Martin Guptill whacked a quick-fire 14-ball 23 in Guyana’s total of 123/7, which the Patriots rolled over at ease. Chris Gayle didn’t find his foot firm, as he was dismissed for 15 runs off 16 balls. In the opening game, Kiwi duo of Brendon McCullum and Colin Munro took a liking for the St. Lucia stars bowlers, after scoring an unbroken 132-run partnership, which saw Trinbago Knight Riders cruise home by nine wickets. Chasing 133, McCullum blasted seven sixes in his unbeaten 58 off 27 balls while Munro hit three maximums in his 39-ball 66.
The CPL has started on a sparkling note, and with the heavy weights turning out in fashion, it will interesting to see the number of close games under the stars. The World Boss is expected to come good at some stage of the tournament, and once he starts getting a feel of the leather it will be difficult to stop him from going big.
