Indian batsman Karun Nair had a strong fondness for cars. He wanted to stand out from the others and loved to deal with pace. However, he did not want a car that is common. Nair’s choice of car was the red Ford Mustang which he wanted to own someday.

The 25-year-old was desperate for the car and now he owns it finally. Fellow Indian teammate Ishant Sharma was the first one to grab the Ford Mustang and Nair even had a talk with Ishant to inspect the car.

“From the time I was young, I always wanted something fast and unique, something that stood out. It couldn’t be a car everyone had. It had to be the red Ford Mustang.”

“I heard it was coming to India two years ago, and waited. Ishant Sharma was one of the first people who got one in India, and I checked with him about the car. It took some time to come to Bengaluru, but when it did, I bought it. It took three or four months for delivery.” said Karun Nair.

His journey:

However, the journey has not been easy for the Delhi Daredevils batsman. He bought his first car with the help of his father who contributed half the money. He also discussed the problems he faced while driving his first car and how he became a pro at driving.

“But it has taken a while to get here. I bought my first car about 10 years ago—a black Honda Jazz, for which I put in half the money and my dad put in the rest. He never allowed me to ride a two-wheeler because he felt it wasn’t safe. I too wasn’t crazy about a two-wheeler, as I was focussed on playing cricket. The Jazz was the first time I drove a car. Like it happens to everyone who just begins to drive, I once got stuck at a signal and was not able to move the car for almost for ten minutes. The signal went green and red twice. People behind were shouting at me to move. I gave up and asked my father to move it because I was unable to get off first gear and go!” continued Nair.

Later, I went on a couple of trips to Mysore, Bandipur and a few other places and my driving improved. With the Mustang too, I have been to Bandipur and Wayanad, and got there an hour earlier than before [laughs]. Buying the Mustang was not easy: My dad laid down certain conditions. I had to play for India first. Then, when I played for India, he said ‘Get settled’ added the right handed cricketer.

When the Jodhpur born batsman planned to buy his second car, the Ford Mustang, his dad asked him to score a century. Nair lived up to his father’s expectations in the most appropriate way possible and slammed a triple century against England. His father was left speechless by his performance and he Gave him a nod when Nair showed him the video of the car.
