The English crowd is extremely responsive in a Test match and love to get behind their players. Their reactions have pumped the England players up from time to time and the fans attempt from time to time to get under the skin of the opposition. India’s KL Rahul took a splendid catch at second slip to dismiss the opposition skipper Joe Root but there was some doubt if it was actually clean. The crowd, of course, thought it was not out and booed Rahul for claiming it as Root nodded his way back to the pavilion.

The on-field umpires had asked the TV umpire for assistance and after a lot of reviews arrived at the conclusion that the ball didn’t touch the grass before landing in his fingers. It didn’t take a really long time for the man standing at second slip to come into play again. Just four overs later Mohammed Shami induced an edge from the English all-rounder Ben Stokes’ bat and Rahul caught it knee high.

It was dead out this time, no replays required and the batsman was walking. Rahul then in his celebration put his hands around the ears asking the fans for their reaction to this catch.

Things went downhill for England in the first innings, coming out to bat, late in the first session, they didn’t lose any wickets but once Alastair Cook got out they were bowled out before the next interval. Ishant got them a couple of early wickets along with Jasprit Bumrah at the other end. And then out of nowhere, Hardik Pandya a bowler with ‘hit-the-deck’ tag, was swinging the ball.

He wasn’t just getting it to move away which is something most seamers manage to do but he was also shaping it into the batters. He enjoyed every bit of it and each wicket just pushed him to try harder. There came a moment with the wicket of Adil Rashid when he had the ball in hand and raised it to acknowledge that he had claimed a fifer. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant also playing his debut game took five catches behind the wickets and had a memorable outing.
