There has been an ancient ideology that bowlers are the real match-winners in any format of the game and this fact has proved to be right at most times. However, with the recent transformation in the game and the popularization of the Twenty20 format, the bowling numbers have certainly dropped to considerable levels.

But the spinners whether finger spinners or the leggies have been performing exceeding well, especially in the shortest format of the game. Former Indian cricketer Kris Srikkanth mentioned in his column that the present lot of spinners have adjusted themselves very nicely in the T20 format.

T20 format was seen as the final nail in the coffin for spinners

Srikkanth noted that at the time of the arrival of T20 cricket, it was perhaps seen as the worst times coming for the slower bowlers. But after almost 14 years since its launch, the spinners are probably termed as the match-winning bowlers and every team in the world now relies more on its spin bowlers to take wickets in the Twenty20 format.

The likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Mitchell Santner, Sunil Narine, Imran Tahir and many more exciting spinners make themselves part of the exclusive tally, who have performed remarkably for their respective teams and franchises.

“When a third format was added (T20) it was largely seen as the final nail in the coffin for spinners around the world. A good 14 years after the launch, the slow bowlers have found refreshing ways to combat broad bats, benign tracks and smaller boundaries to emerge as the key component not only T20s but white ball cricket in general,” wrote Srikanth in his column for TOI.

The former Indian cricketer also mentioned about the massive domination of the spinners in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He reckoned that the best way to stop the run flow in a T20 game is to take wickets and the spinners are doing this thing well in IPL 2018.

“We are into the 11th season of the most competitive T20 league in the world, and the numbers available now are a fair sample size. Among the top nine wickets takers, five are spinners. The impact bowlers are also among the most economical, that also suggests that the best way to curb run flow is to pick wickets,” noted the former Indian cricketer in his piece.
