Stats: Most number of Twenty20 final wins as captain

Rohit Sharma extended his good captaincy record in the Twenty20 format with the Indian team as well with the Indian opener winning all the series in the absence of Virat Kohli. His decision to send Vijay Shankar ahead of Dinesh Karthik nearly backfired on Sunday. However, the experience of Karthik which he wanted at the end worked well as the keeper-batsman chased down 34 runs from the last two overs including a six off the final ball when they needed five runs.

This was the 5th time Rohit Sharma led a team in the final of a Twenty20 tournament and ended up lifting the trophy every time. He captained Mumbai Indians in three IPL finals (2013, 2015 and 2017) and a Champions League T20 (2013) final. Rohit’s teams had similar starts to their victorious campaigns as all of them began with losses. Rohit took over the MI captaincy in the 2013 IPL after they lost three of their first six games while the 2013 CLT20 began with a loss and a washout.

Rohit-led MI started off the 2015 IPL with four consecutive losses and lost their first game in the 2017 IPL and also in the Nidahas Trophy. With the 5th T20 final win as a skipper, Rohit became only the 3rd captain to win as many finals in this format. MS Dhoni won a record six finals while Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik won five finals. However, no captain other than Rohit has a 100 win percentage in the T20 tournament finals. (Min: 5 finals)

Overall, the Nidahas Trophy final was the 9th final in which Rohit featured in the T20 format. His teams ended up on winning side in eight of them; the most for any Indian. In addition to the five titles as a captain, Rohit was also a part of the WT20 2007, IPL 2009 and the Asia Cup T20 2016 final winning teams. Suresh Raina, who also part of the Nidahas final, is second behind Rohit with seven T20 final wins as a player.
