Mohammad Rizwan is placed in the fourth position in the Men’s T20I Player Rankings. But, his performance this year makes him the top player in the shortest format of the game. On December 16, Pakistan defeated West Indies after chasing a target of 208 runs in 18.5 overs. On the first ball of the 11th over, Rizwan hit a boundary to become the first player to score 2000 T20 runs in a calendar year.

In the three T20Is, Rizwan made 203 runs at an impressive average of 67.67 and a strike rate of 159.84. He made two half-centuries for Pakistan in this three-match series. Rizwan won the player of the match and player of the series award for scoring runs consistently. It was Rizwan’s fifth player of the series award, and he equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of winning the most player of the series award in a calendar year.

Rizwan made 1326 runs in 29 T20Is this year at an average of 73.66 and a strike rate of 134.89. He made one century and 12 half-centuries in 2021. Before this year, Rizwan had made only 313 runs in 26 matches. He is also the first player to make over 1000 T20 runs in a calendar year.

Rizwan started this year with a century against South Africa. He made 104 not-out off 64 balls in the first T20I of South Africa’s tour of Pakistan. Pakistan won the match by three runs. Pakistan won the series by a margin of 2-1, and it was Pakistan’s first series win against South Africa since 2013 in T20Is.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Mohammad Rizwan’s epic milestone

After Pakistan defeated West Indies in the third T20I, it became the first team to win 20 T20I matches in a calendar year. The Men in Green bettered their own record of winning 17 T20Is in 2018. Mohammad Rizwan, with 1326 runs, played a huge role in Pakistan achieving this milestone.

Rizwan was out for a single-digit score only thrice, including two ducks against South Africa and Afghanistan. He made more than 40 runs in 14 out of 29 innings in 2021. Apart from the series against Bangladesh, Rizwan scored at least one half-century in every series he took part in.
