The introduction of various cricket leagues around the globe has opened new pathways for cricketers to shine on a global stage. In the fast cut-throat format of T20, batters are often allowed to play with freedom without holding their exquisite strokemaking which was rare in yesteryears. Hence, the top-drawer competition like the Indian Premier League (IPL) bestows the most prolific run scorer of the tournament with the Orange Cap after the conclusion of the IPL final.
It is always a hard-fought contest between the batters to topple each other in the race for the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Hence scoring truckloads of runs has always been a topsy-turvy ride for the batting supremacy thereby scaling monumental records in the process. The 17th edition of the tournament has also seen a feisty contest between the batters, as the Orange Cap has often exchanged owners in the marquee event.
Batter’s Dream Award in IPL
Gujarat Titans’ Shubman Gill eventually emerged as the leading run-scorer of the tournament, after amassing 890 runs in the 2023 edition of the marquee tournament. He was very close to breaking Virat Kohli’s phenomenal record of 973 runs in a single IPL season in 2016 but ultimately fell short.
Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis once again had a terrific season with the bat, as the veteran hit 730 runs in 14 matches, finishing second in the race. Chennai Super Kings batter Devon Conway hit 672 runs and finished third while Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal with 639 and 625 runs to finish fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
The Orange Cap Saga
From Matthew Hayden to Sachin Tendulkar to Jos Buttler, numerous top-drawer cricketers have been awarded the IPL Orange Cap. Interestingly, David Warner is the only player with three Orange Caps - 2015, 2017, and 2019. Whereas, ‘The Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle won the Orange Cap twice in his IPL journey in 2011 and 2012.
The only uncapped player to have ever clinched the award was Australia’s Shaun Marsh in 2008 at the age of 24. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants (introduced in 2022) are the only franchise that’s yet to win the coveted IPL Orange Cap. Now with the new IPL 2024 knocking around the corner, it will be interesting to see which batter sets the stage on fire.
