Rohit Sharma’s career as an opener in Test cricket continues to touch new heights as he struck his 3rd century in four innings. In the final Test against South Africa in Ranchi, Rohit smashed his maiden Test double. After surviving through the tough opening hour, the 32-year-old attacked the visiting bowlers. He scored 212 from only 255 balls with help of 28 fours and six maximums. He brought up his double century shortly after Lunch on 2nd day but was dismissed soon after.

1 – Rohit Sharma became the first Indian to complete a double century in Test cricket by hitting a six. As many as 13 players before Rohit completed their Test 200s by smashing a six.

4 – Rohit is only the 4th player to have completed two 100-run milestones with a six in a Test inning. He hit a six to complete his 100 and 200 in this innings. Wasim Akram achieved the feat during his lone Test double ton which came against Zimbabwe in 1996 Sheikhupura Test. During the 2004 Faisalabad Test against Pakistan, Sanath Jayasuriya completed his century and double century by hitting a six. In the same year against Pakistan, Virender Sehwag brought up his century and triple hundred with a six during the Multan Test.


4 – Rohit is only the 4th player to score a double century in both ODIs and Test cricket. Rohit has a record three ODI 200s but scored his first in Tests on Sunday. Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Chris Gayle are the other three players with this double.


4 – Rohit Sharma completed 2000 runs in Test cricket on the first day of this Test. He thus became only the 4th player to aggregate 2000+ runs in all the three formats.

Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill and Virat Kohli are the other three players to have amassed at least 2000 runs in all the three international formats. Rohit also went past 7000 runs in first-class cricket on Sunday.


9 – Rohit’s nine tons in 2019 are the joint-most by any player in a calendar year as an opener. Sachin Tendulkar in 1998, Graeme Smith in 2005 and David Warner in 2016 also hit nine tons apiece while opening the innings.


19 – Number of sixes by Rohit in this series; the most by any player in a Test series. He surpassed Shimron Hetmyer’s 15 sixes during the 2-match Test series against Bangladesh last year.

51 – Rohit’s six to complete his 200 was the 50th maximum he has hit in Test cricket. Rohit has taken only 51 innings for hitting 50 Test sixes; the 2nd fewest by any player. Shahid Afridi hit 50 maximums in only 46 innings in the longer format.

54 – Sharma has struck 54 maximums in all formats against South Africa. Only Chris Gayle (56) has more sixes in International cricket against the South African team than Rohit. The Indian opener has smashed 22 sixes in Test cricket against Proteas which are the 2nd most behind Andrew Flintoff’s 23.


249 – Balls Rohit needed for completing his double century in this match. The 6th fastest Test double by an Indian as the top five are recorded by Virender Sehwag only. Overall, Rohit’s double is the 9th fastest in Tests for India.


529 – Runs Rohit has scored in this series; the 5th Indian opener to score 500 runs in a Test series. The last Indian opener with 500+ runs in a Test series was Virender Sehwag in the 2005 home series against Pakistan.


1967 – Rohit Sharma has amassed 1967 runs across all formats in 2019. Among Indians, only Virender Sehwag (2355 in 2008) has more runs in a calendar year as an opener than Rohit in 2019.
