India (IND) will take on the West Indies (WI) in the first Test of the two-match series on October 2, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. It will be the 101st Test match between India and the West Indies. India has won 23 out of the 100 Test matches against West Indies, while West Indies has been victorious on 30 occasions. India has not lost a Test match against West Indies since 2002. India has won the last nine Test series against the West Indies. West Indies has played a total of 12 Test series in India. It will be the first home series for Shubman Gill as the captain of the Indian side. Gill made his captaincy debut against England during the five-match series in July. The series ended in a draw with both teams winning two matches each. Gill had a great outing with the bat and finished as the leading run-scorer. India made a couple of changes to the squad that played against England. The likes of Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, and Shardul Thakur have been dropped. Devdutt Padikkal has been picked in the squad, along with Axar Patel. Ravindra Jadeja has been appointed the vice-captain.

The West Indies will be led by Roston Chase, and it will be his second assignment as the captain after the series against Australia. Two key players, Alzarri Jospeh and Shamar Joseph, have been ruled out of the squad due to injuries. Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze have been picked in the side after they were dropped from the last series. Khary Pierre has received his maiden Test callup and might feature in the playing 11.
