After Sri Lankan fans and Sanath Jayasuriya, it is now the turn of former legendary cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan who feels the team has let the followers and supporters down by not putting up a fight during the T20I series against England. Murali who is also a member of the advisory committee of past cricketers, led by former Sri Lankan batter Aravinda De Silva, is working on ways to stem the rot and is trying to implement a few changes in the cricketing system going ahead.

Apparently, the island nation’s abject surrender against the B-looking England side has left experts, fans and critics agitated, to say the least. In the third T20I, the team were shot out for just 91 runs and that was the last nail in the coffin. That defeat was the fifth consecutive loss in the shortest format, leading to the experts’ question as to where the team is heading.

Indeed this is no time to analyze and make changes, as Sri Lanka faces England in a three-match ODI series starting on Tuesday 29th June. With seniors players like Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, and Kusal Perera time and again failing, Sri Lanka certainly looks crestfallen.

The former off-spinner posted a tweet on his official handle on Twitter and wrote, that it felt Sri Lanka never played cricket before. Murali further wrote that the side’s pride has been tarnished and it’s happening now for a long time.

Sri Lankan fans disappointed by the team and boycott players on social media

With each passing day, the passionate fans and followers of the Sri Lankan team are losing their patience with their team. They feel the players are playing pathetic cricket each passing day. The frustration crept so much that on Sunday 27th June they launched a campaign on social media #unfollowcricketers and apparently blocked vice-captain Kusal Mendis and opening batter Dhanushka Gunathilaka for their poor display with the bat during the course of the three-match T20I series.

They also felt the players do not deserve to be on the public platforms and everyone should rather block and unfollow them, rather than supporting them. After the ODI series against England, the team will play a limited-overs series against India starting on July 13.
