Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi passed away on Tuesday which sent a wave of sorrow across the state. He was admitted to the city hospital on July 28 and breathed his last the other day at 6.10 PM at the age of 94. His impact on Tamil Nadu as a politician was immense but very few are aware of the fact he was also a huge cricket fan. N Srinivasan shed light on how he used to follow Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL and used to be happy after their victory.

Srinivasan recalled the days when Karunanidhi used to visit the Chepauk Stadium to watch the Men in Yellow during the IPL. He also felt that if the matches in Chennai wouldn’t have shifted due to the political tension in the State, the veteran politician would’ve surely witnessed CSK lifting the title this year.

“Whenever CSK used to play here (in Chennai), he would come to watch the matches. He would go upset when CSK would lose. To him, cricket was very important. He was a great admirer of the sport. Unfortunately CSK had to leave Chennai, otherwise, he would have been there to see them lift the cup,” Srinivasan said while speaking to ET Now.

He would cancel the meetings to watch cricket

According to The News Minute, M Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi had revealed that he used to call at home to ask the score of cricket matches. One of the staff members also remembered how he used to reschedule or cancel the appointments in order to watch the live cricketing action. “He would somehow adjust meetings, or even cancel them, the staff member said.

The sad news spread like wildfire and in no time a huge crowd gathered in front of the Rajaji Hall where the body of M Karunanidhi was kept. Even the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was amongst the several politicians who arrived to pay homage to one of the top personalities in Tamil Nadu.
