The Maharashtra Government has joined the list of those who have decided to reward the Indian women’s cricket team for their stunning display in the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup. They have announced a cash reward of Rs. 50 lakh for each player of the team.

Top order batting duo Poonam Raut and Smriti Mandhana, as well as all-rounder Mona Meshram, are all residents of the Maharashtra. Even though the England team defeated them by 9 runs, the tournament was a positive outcome for women’s cricket not only for India but throughout the world.

The Indian team’s performance throughout the tournament earned praise as well as monetary rewards for bringing about a beautiful change in the perception and outlook of the people with a stellar display in the tournament.

Rewards pour in

The Indian Railways was the first to announce a cash reward of Rs 1.30 crore for 10 members of the Mithali Raj-led side, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had declared to reward Rs. 50 lakh to each player. The board had also declared that the support staff will be given a cash reward of Rs.25 lakh each. It earned praise from women cricketers overseas as well.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Sushma Verma were also offered a job in the police by the government of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh respectively. The chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chauhan too announced that the women’s team would be awarded Rs. 50 lakh in Bhopal.

The BCCI also looked to increase a hike in their prize money after thoughts of putting forward an increment in the upcoming Special General Body meeting. The general body meeting then decided to increase it to Rs. 1 crore per player.

The Women in Blue performed exceedingly well throughout the tournament before ending up as runner-up as England outplayed the side by a narrow 9-run margin in a nail-biting final at Lord’s on July 23.
