Marcus Trescothick century denies Pakistan a victory

Pakistan were held to a draw in the tour game after Somerset put up a sturdy batting performance in the second innings. Pakistan had set a tough target of 468 to chase riding on Azhar Ali’s brilliant 101 not out. In reply, the hosts were carried by Veteran former England batsman Marcus Trescothick hit his 47th First class century to help his side draw the game.

The 40-year-old hit a strokeful 106 and before Jack Leach (six not out) and Tim Groenewald (four not out) survived the last 16 balls of this eventful three-day fixture and end at 258/8. Leg spinner Yasir Shah was the best bowler for Pakistan in the last innings, taking 4/17.

Earlier, The Pakistanis resumed on 140 for four Tuesday with Azhar Ali 50 not out and Asad Shafiq unbeaten on 26. Both went on to add 138 in 30 overs as Pakistan declared on 236 for four in their second innings. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq closed the innings as soon as Azhar Ali reached his century.

Pakistan now has one more three-day game, against Sussex at Hove starting Friday, before the first Test of a four-match series against England begins at Lord’s on July 14. Centurion Azhar Ali felt that the team looked very confident during the game.

“It was very important to spend time out on the pitch and getting some runs is an extra on top. This game we played very good cricket and as a unit we are looking a very confident side right now,” Ali told reporters after stumps.
