In rather shocking reports from the BCCI, a story has emerged that a member of India’s World Cup-winning squad in 2011 has been implicated in a match-fixing scandal in the Rajputana Premier League (RPL) in Jaipur. Pankaj Kumar – the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit chief has begun an investigation into the same, something that has been going on for almost a year. The RPL has involved domestic club cricketers and has been telecast on Neo Sports in its current duration.

This is not the first time that a player has come under such scrutiny. Sreesanth, the former India pacer has also come under scrutiny despite being acquitted of all the charges. A source has been quoted as saying that a bowler had bowled ‘blatant wides’ in a tight encounter to throw the game, something that many have seen in the past as well. Manoj Prabhakar and Mohammed Azharuddin have also been a few names in the hat of fixing scandals in the past.

Currently probing the links with private entities says, Pankaj Kumar

Pankaj Kumar, the head of the BCCI’s anti-corruption unit has spoken on the matter, stating that he was still in the process of trying to establish the links between the private entities and other officials. As far as the World Cup winning member is concerned, it would seem as though he has been noticed in and around the ‘mastermind of the ordeal’.

“We are currently probing links between private entities, those who are part of the cricket fraternity and officials. We will take action if there is evidence that links them to corruption,” he said.

“This is new methodology bookies and fixers have come up with. They host a private T20 tournament, select a venue and arrange to have it telecast. Because if you telecast it, then the bookie community and betting community gets involved and everyone sitting in a drawing room can bet,” Kumar had said.

“Not even once can I recall a meeting in which you have chosen to discuss this issue. Not even once have I been asked what the magnitude of the problem is and what needs to be done,” he had written in an email to BCCI CEO Rahul Johri.
