Prior to the third Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, India were in tremendous pressure after losing the first two matches at Edgbaston and Lord’s respectively. However, Virat Kohli and his men soared above expectations and disdainfully brushed aside the Three Lions by a margin of 203 runs. The triumph was also their second at the venue after their coup back in 2007 under Rahul Dravid’s leadership.

Joe Root won the toss and decided to have a crack at the Indian batters. However, the decision didn’t quite work out in their favour as the visiting team racked up a significant 329 runs courtesy of Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane’s half-centuries. Hardik Pandya’s five-wicket haul turned out to be a bolt from the blue for the Three Lions as they capitulated for 161 runs and subsequently conceded a lead of 168 runs.

India keep themselves alive

With a massive lead under their belt, India found themselves in the driver’s seat and kept piling on the agony in their second innings. Kohli scored his 23rd Test ton and coupled with Pandya and Cheteshwar Pujara’s fifties, the visitors racked up 352 runs to set a daunting target of 521 runs. The Poms huffed and puffed en route their run chase and lost quite a few wickets early on.

Nevertheless, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes put their heads down to counter the venom of the Indian bowlers. They put on 169 runs, but Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc with the second new ball and picked up his second five-wicket haul in Tests. After England’s hefty defeat, Michael Vaughan, the former English cricketer, admitted that

The cricketer turned commentator took to Twitter and wrote, “India have been tremendous this week … Batted,Bowled & Caught better than England … It’s great for Test Cricket to have such a close series … #ENGvIND”
