Jasprit Bumrah took the second five-wicket haul of his short Test career so far at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, August 21, pushing England to the verge of a loss. Bumrah sent back some of the top English batsmen including captain Joe Root and centurion Jos Buttler and the hosts were staring at defeat with just one wicket in hand to survive an entire day.

Bumrah made his Test debut in South Africa earlier this year. Recently, the skiddy 24-year-old bowler made a return to the Test side after suffering a thumb injury in his non-bowling hand and dished out an impressive show. After the fourth day’s play, he attended a press conference and said that patience and consistency were key to succeed in Tests and he kept the emphasis on those two factors.

‘I worked on my fitness when injured’

“When I made my first-class debut, my first spell was of 10 overs. So, I was always used to bowling a lot of overs in Ranji Trophy. That always helps. I am used to bowling a lot of overs. That helped me today. When I was injured, I was working on my fitness, my training schedule, I was always in touch with our trainers, because I wanted to be in a good space as far as fitness is concerned when I made my comeback. All of that helps today,” Bumrah mentioned.

“In Test cricket, it’s all about patience and consistency, so that was my main focus today. You can’t blast the batsman out, I was looking to bowl good lines and lengths. In the end, it was a good day. We were just trying to get one wicket and not look too ahead,” he added.

Bumrah took 5 for 85 and was close to his sixth when tail-ender Adil Rashid got off in a no-ball which he nicked to the slip. Had Bumrah claimed his sixth scalp with that ball, the match would have ended inside four days. England were 311 for 9 at stumps on Day 4, requiring another 210 runs to win the series.
